Not exactly sure what my fish are. I'm almost positive I think I have a JD and one of a hybrid cichlid. They are both under 2" yet. Store owner says the JD will be about 6" as adult, and the other only 4 - 5". She said they can be housed together until they are old enough to want to mate. I have them in seperate tanks right now. Just wanting to know if I can actually put them together, then they would be able to share a larger tank. I don't want to just 'put them in and see what happens', I hate to see fish fight. * The hybrid has 4 vertical stripes that follow through the dorsal fin, and the anal fin is rounded. It looks really light blue with brown stripes under the aquarium light. But under a normal flashlight the blue actually looks iridescent aqua blue. Looking in my book,2005-Aquariums, The complete guide to freshwater and saltwater aquariums (What a joke!). They give just enough info on each species to get you into trouble, not to inform you! Anyway, It looks the closest to the CYNOTILAPA AFRA that grow to about 5 1/2". The JD is very dark, brwons and black color with the reflective circle of dots being dark golden, when not stressed. So do you think they would be ok in a tank together, or not? (Will post photos when I figure it out how to !) Also need to know if I can put my larger Red Eye Tetras in with either/both of them too?

Pics??

Your hybrid sounds like some sort of zebra mbuna. Personally, I don't like mixing new world and old world cichlids, but many folks on this forum do. How big are the tanks you have? This will dictate what you can put with them.

Why do people seem to dislike 'hybrids' so much? Is a hybrid something that a person put together in a lab somewhere? I don't get it. I think they're very pretty. Please clue me in, Ok?!

Well the problem with African hybrids is they end up in circulation and are often passed along as pure even though they are not. They end up messing with the blood lines which can make it very difficult to get ahold of pure stock.
In some cases, like Lake Victoria cichlids, the species in the wild are extinct or close to it. They hybridize easily and if care isn't taken to preserve the pure species they will be lost forever.

I agree.
If you have a hybrid, that is fine. But if it gets passed on, that's when problems arise.

SO.....AGAIN, QUESTION : WHAT IS A HYBRID, EXACTLY ?:popcorn:You have all just explained WHY you don't like 'THEM'. BUT HAVE NOT ANSWERED, WHAT IS A HYBRID ? .............there is a dark silence...........I guess I'll GOOGLE it, since no one here can actually explain WHAT the **** it is to me ! ? Yah,...thanks a bunch :irked: :p :WTF: rly :wall:

SECOND QUESTION I HAD ASKED : Is it going to be alright to put my Red Eye Tetras in with either one of these? Will the Tetras be ok, or does that vary with the other fishes' personality?
