Over the weekend I realized my tank water was much cooler then normal, 72F. Over the last few days it's stayed around that cool, and I'm still waiting for my heater to arrive in the mailVia amazon. My question is what is the lowest recommended temp for flowerhorns? I leave weeks at a time and rather not have Mrs top off tank so minimal evap. Tight lids on all tanks. I usually set my heaters at 77 year round. My fish are still very active and eat well even at 72F., and I'm unsure how long the heater has been broken(been out of town). A few sites recommend 86F, is there a benefit to having the tank so warm? Newbie questions I know, but just curious.

Flowerhorn are very strong fish and can adapt to many temp changes. I have seen them living in 65 degree waters and above 90. The recommendation you found is correct they should be at 80-85 and 85 is preference. The reason for this is very simple while they can take a colder temp like what you have going on right now. If you wish their coloration to be at optimal level they need a warm tank. Also it will help them to grow fast, color best at this range, head or (kok) will grow best at this range and the appetite for the fish will be much better as well.

Thanks for the reply bastardfish. I will try setting the heater up to 85 and hope the temp does all that you say. I generally assumed really warm water might increase metabolism so much that the life of the fish is shortened. I plan on having him as long as possible.
