Hey everyone, was just wondering if there was any out there that has kept fancy goldfish before, more specifically orandas. My girlfriend has two at the moment in a ten gallon (yes i understand the implications of the small tank, we're moving them up to a 55 as soon as we get the money) Now the thing is she loves these guys to death and shes been bugging me about how ones been acting more lethargic lately. Now I'm no expert on golfish so i was wondering if any of you might have an answer, checked to see if it was dropsy or anything like that but the scales areny raised or anything and its not bloat or a swim bladder infection because when she does move she swims fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated and would ease her worries. Thanks guys.

do you happen to have your water parameters(ammonia, nitrite, nitrate)?

I don't keep the fancies but I do keep the comets.

She doesn't have any test kits so I can't tell you exactly but the tank is kept clean, plenty of water changes so i wouldn't imagine ammonia or anything being to high, only one fish is acting off, the other one is completely fine

you could probably take it to the fish store around you if they test water for customers.

what is considered plenty? 75% weekly? 50% daily? 10% weekly?

Do a 50% water change and weekly and don't forget to declorinate the water. I have a Black Moor and common comet in a 65 that are both about 10 years old. I do a weekly 50% water change and it seems to revilalize the fish.. These two carp have tons of personality and we really enjoy them. P.S. doing a 50% water change on a 10 gallon should take no time at all.

Yah I realise this, she usually does it every two weeks so Ill have her bump it up to a weekly and fingers crossed for the big tank. Hopefully it'll come soon. Her dads kind of a control freak so might be a bit :/

Thank you both of you guys, I'll get a water test within the week to be certain but seriously thanks for the info guys, she was getting really worried

Could you please give full details in this format?

1. What is the size of your tank?

2. What are your water parameters? State the brand of test kit used.

3. Is your aquarium set up freshwater or brackish water?

4. How long the aquarium has been set up?

5. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them?

6. Were the fish placed under quarantine period (minus the first batch from the point wherein the tank is ready to accommodate the inhabitants)?

7. What temperature is the tank water currently?

8. Are there live plants in the aquarium?

9. What filter are you using? State brand, maintenance routine and power capacity.

10. Any other equipment used (aside from heater and filter which are two very important components of the tank)?

11. Does your aquarium receive natural sunlight at any given part of the day? What is your lighting schedule (assuming you do not rely on sunlight for our viewing pleasure)?

12. When did you perform your last water change and how much water was changed? How often do you change your water? Do you vacuum the substrate?

13. What foods do you provide your fish? What is the feeding schedule?

14. What unusual signs have you observed in your fish?

15. Have you treated your fish ahead of diagnosis? If so, what treatments did you use? State your reasons for planning ahead of proper diagnosis.

16. Insert photos of fish in question and full tank shot if necessary.

Allan, you are forgetting that his girlfriend keeps TWO goldfish in a TEN GALLON tank. She'll need more than a weekly water change. I remember doing daily having to quarantine 2-3 small goldfish in a 10g alone just to keep up with my water parameters.

Can't these goldfish be moved to large tubs instead? A 40g tub will suffice enough and operate filtration 10x the tub's water volume. It'll make do for the time being.

goldfish don't need a heater, in fact its advised against.

you probably do need a bigger filter, manufacturers alway over rate the filters so you need one rated for larger then your tank.

try to get your parameters, just because the other fish isn't showing signs doesn't mean its not poor water because some fish are more resilient then others.

If its not a problem with your water you can attempt to treat with melafix(which is a natural, so less dangerous but also less powerful).
