I dont think it was painted on purpose but the area it was found does not look pristine exactly. Probably some sort of chemical (iron oxide perhaps?) that this gator got into...

on the other hand, we must consider the possibility of a new color morph. i am skeptical, but it is possible.

It's more than likely Iron Oxide, especially if that Gator is a transient Male........Iron Oxide is the orange sludge you see in stagnant Canals or Ditches, and it does stain......Every now and then you'll see a Turtle picture pop up with the same thing........
