I was looking at my local aquarium societies classifieds and came across this. Is this just a geographical variant or selective breeding? I've purchased from the breeder before. Here is the link. http://www.gcca.net/classifieds/classified.php/listing/16073

I just noticed i bought other fish from the breeder not the uaru.

Still the natural color pattern, just a very very good diet, probably vitamin enriched or high in astaxanthin (from Krill) or carotenoids... Lovely fish, but still just plain ol' amphiacanthoides...

I've seen them before, They are rare they are not unattainable. I don't rember for sure but I thought Rapps had some a few weeks or a month ago, not positive about that however. Uaru fernandezye I'm not sure I spelled it correctly. They pop up from time to time.

Actually Orange Urau are pretty rare fish to come by. I was thinking of getting some but just don't have the tank space.

That's just a regular Uaru amphiacanthoides that's been color feed, it not Uaru fernandezyepezi . He had that same fish listed on Aquabid for about 2 months and no one bought it, nothng special in my opinion. Ken

Thanks, I never heard of one before. And when he said "Unattainable" i was curious as to how rare these are.

They eat veggies, I'd think if you fed a uaru a diet high in something like shredded carrot it would color up like that.

A couple of mine went this colour in the summer when I was feeding them loads flies and lava from the pond. I think it's diet, we do feed them carrot too but they get that all year....
