Do any of you that keep sunfish, have now or ever have kept Orangespotted and Bluespotted together? I am thinking about it, they will be in a 90 gal. with some Madtoms and maybe some Mexican tetras (not the blind ones) or some other minnows etc.

Thanks,

I keep both Bluespotted (BSS) and orangespotted (OSS) together with tadpole madtoms. Aside from the fact that the BSS and the OSS act as though they intend to spawn every now and then all is fine. The male OSS seems to get a little irritated at the female BSS after a while and keeps her away from his little bachelor pad. No major stuff just bravado.

Never kept Mexican tetras though.

Thanks, Teleost

I was hopeing all would go well. Never kept the Mex tetras either, just looking for something different and active (maybe there are too active)?

I've kept many types of dithers (notropis, cyprinella etc) with OSS & BSS. Never had a problem with aggression. The dithers will steal the food from the timid sunfish at first but in time the sunfish will get the hang of feeding time. My sunfish simply ignored the dithers, I would expect you to have the same experience.

BTW: I think BSS & OSS make excellent tankmates. The OSS are a bit more aggressive but never to problem levels.

I have kept sunfish, they did ok together when small, before my bass ate them. Just have one Bluegill left. We don't have OSS or BSS here, but they really look great.
