I was just feeding my rays and I noticed something that I hadn't noticed before. I have two of what I believe, and others on this site have told me, are orbignyi. They are both females the larger light colored one is about 10 inches or so in diameter, the other is darker and about 9 inches or so. The light colored one has a typical pattern which is very busy, the darker one has a pattern which encircles lighter colored areas which are a few shades lighter but still brown. What I just noticed is that one the darker ones underside outer two inches are a dark grey color. The area around the mouth is still light but the rest of the outer margins of the ventral surface of the disc is dark. I checked the other female and she has a completely white underside.

What are everyones thoughts or experience with this?

Most rays have an all white belly when they are smaller but still have the belly button spot. As they get larger most of their bellies begin to develop pattern or dusky areas.

Then why the difference between the two? Especially that the larger of the two still stark white? In my experience all 5 of my motoros kept their white bellies well above 12 inches in diameter. The only one that I had with belly patterning such as this was a leo/pearl male that I had. I always assumed the leo bloodline was the cause of this.

I have had motoros with and without underside patterning. My female marble has patterning around the perimeter of her underside while my male does not. Have seen pics of black rays with all white undesides. Depends on genetics.
