I just ordered a sunsun HW404B which is supposedly an upgrade to the 303B. Now it seems like pretty decent sized canister (for a 55 gallon that is) so how much media do I need? It comes with basic media, 4 filter pads and 1 plastic mesh layer. I have 4 liters of matrix and 5 bags of seeded Hagen biomax for aquaclear filters. Any suggestions on what else to cram in it? Also what should I use for a prefilter layer before the filter pads?

I have the hw-303 and it works really well with doubled up filter pads in the bottom basket, new and well matured seeded bio max in the top basket with an extra filter pad on top of that. I have not got anything in the middle basket (note that I have 3 baskets instead of 4) yet. Going to add some bio balls in the middle one. Thats how I have mine set up so far. Marineland rite size filter pad that you can cut works really well in replacing those other filter pads. Btw, you could use bio balls in that basket closet to the top basket. See all kinds and sizes on e-bay all the time.
I am about to buy the 404b. Could you tell me how many liters of media you could fit into each basket? I need to buy media as well and am trying to judge how much i will need to order.

floss pad. fill a tray with ceramic rings, fill a tray with bio balls, use about 1/2 cup of carbon and bottom tray find some filter foam
patience is a virtue sonny. about 1.25 liters of biomedia in each tray. i have 4 liters of matrix in the 3 top baskets and sponges in the bottom basket.
Great thank you for that info!!! So I can assume to need about 1.25 liters of EfhiMech in 1st (bottom basket), 3 blue sponges in 2nd, 1.25 of Seachem Matrix in 3rd, and more Seachem Matrix/polishing media in 4th (top basket). Should be the ultimate filter!

yes that's true, they are more like finer polishing sponges though so you might want to keep one or 2 on top and put coarser spnges like aquaclear sponges on the bottom.
