Well if you read my last month a month or so ago, I had a fluval FX5 on order but it was out of stock.

I cleaned my Tetra Tec ex1200 filters (x2) out instead and had them running good for a month but they are now blocked again.

Setup at the moment is 200 (uk) L tank running 2 x ex 1200 filters.

3 x Orandas (large 6''+)
1 x Silver shark (shark will be moving soon to a friends tank)
1 x Common plec
1 x Apple snail

The question is, from your experience does the FX5 block easily or will it run much better than the ex 1200's without needing constant cleaning?

Have you had bad experiences with the ex1200 tetratec blocking too?

Got a good price on ebay I think at £135 inc delivery.

I have had the ex1200, seems to clog after about a month even with a couple of small fish in a 50 gallon. Pipes too small and stupid right angles in the pipes. Designed by fuds!

Fx5 will rock your worlddd as I have one.

I do not see why people complain about canisters clogging up... Yes you need to maintenance them more often, but that means that they are doing their job... Getting the crap out of the tank.

The fx5 probably does not clog because of the larger pump and slightly larger cross sectional area.

Yep , swoping my 2 Tetratec 1200's for a Fx5 aswel , clog up really fast i am having touble keeping the water clean even when i am doing W/C's 3 times a week and having to clean them out every couple of weeks because of the crap in them . Yes it shows that they do the job of collecting the crap out of the tank but when i am having to still do W/C's 3 times a week SUCKS !

and i have a FX5 on my other tank and have had no problem with it so i thought i would get another one for this tank which has the 2 Tetratec 1200's on it .

Others may disagree with me saying the Fx5 is great but i think it is , IMO one of the best !

Sounds good then, looking forward to saying good bye to the shocking flow rate of tetra tec's. If I wanted to clean it out every month (twice) on top of the already weekly water changes I'd of trained as a plumber.

Going to take out the polishing pad straight off to rid any chance of blockages on the FX5. CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES COME ON !

Filter now up and running for 24hours now. Very impressed so far!

Almost didn't fit it under the tank its so big but managed to squeeze it through with a bit of encouragement.

Ceramic rings on top (2 boxes worth from old filters)
Bio balls in the middle
3 or 4 x modified ex1200 filter pads in the bottom basket

on top of all the usual sponge round the sides and the huge flow this thing is a fish's wet dream!

Vid on youtube for viewing pleasure.
