would you rather order smaller polys that you may or may not have a good place for depending on the size they really come in, or pay quite a bit more for 2 x 12" long polys?

The only online seller i would use is Toyin / Rehobothaquatics you'll know exactly what you are getting he imports wildcaught polypterids and IMO he's the best
and the only online seller that i would recomend and trust completely-Anne
heres a link to him in our vendor section. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=85

Depends on where you're ordering them...
If it's from a reliable place, go with the smaller ones. If you're worried about them getting eaten and have the money for the bigger ones anyway, go for it.

EDIT: Anne beat me to it...

If you don't have a grow-out tank for small bichirs, sounds like you'd be better off getting the larger ones.

Rehoboth and Infinite Aquatics, hands down.

the other one i was looking at was TFD

I would be a little worried about TFD...
I've heard that their fish are usually pretty healthy, but the problem is that they're a wholesaler, so you never really know if you're going to get what you paid for unless you go pick it up. The fish will be very close in size, just probably not as close as it would be with Toyin or Rich.

I ordered an albino from him, and it came in a bit smaller than I was expecting. I mean, I didn't mind it being so small (the price was awesome) but it was going in with some of my polys which were twice to three times its size... in the end it ended up ok and now its big and healthy, so I really don't have any problems and am thinking about ordering with him again. It just depends on if you're willing to risk it... or have a grow out tank ready.

Even before I ever got a bichir, I always preferred to grow fish out myself, my personal preference for acquisition is sub-juvie, half the fun is watching 'em grow.
