i may be moving from the atlanta area to Corvallis, OR. i'll be going for work but i'd love to do my masters at OSU there. what can you guys tell me about the area. is it very affordable? from what i've seen the albany area is a little cheaper and close to Corvallis. any help would be appreciated. thanks

Corvallis is a really nice place - I would try to find something there rather than Albany (which is kind of a pit).

The Animal House Exotic Pets in Corvallis is, in my opinion, the best LFS in the state. Eugene (about 1/2hour south) also has a couple of pretty cool fish stores. The owner deals with OSU a lot and is extremely knowledgable and friendly.

Good luck, I think you will really like OSU!

Corvallis...umm, boring boring and boring. Especially if you're going from the atl to corvallis (i've been to both).

However, your question is very vague. Standards of living are so different from area to area. Just look at the minimum wage for example, 7.25 in georgia, 8.40 here? I moved from the washington/oregon boarder 2 years ago and pay more for everything here then i did in washington. I take home significantly less as there's no sales tax but instead you pay a property tax.

Albany would probably be more diserable to live in but i've had several friends go to OSU and most have ended up moving back to corvallis.

Side note: eugene is an hour away from corvallis

ballinouttacontrol is right that Corvallis is going to be really slow-paced compared to Atlanta, but Albany is going to seem like a real Podunk town. Plus it smells like a-- due to the paper mill...

I said Eugene is only 1/2 hour south, it may be closer to 45 minutes or an hour if you drive pretty slow.

hahaha, my speeding tickets say i drive slow but okay. I've got a friend that works here in eugene but lives in corvallis, everytime i say I can't believe you choose to live 45 minutes away! she always corrects me and says it's an hour from city to city, it's only 45 minutes to the freeway exits.

I'm just offering an outside opinion since i'm not giving it any home cooking (not pro corvallis or pro albany)

i guess im asking is it expensive to live there compared to other places you've been or lived. how much is gas or apartments. here we pay about 2.50 a gall for gas and 1br/1ba apts range from 600-800. is it a safe area? are some places safer than others?

Oregon is pretty safe in general other then portland right now....seems to be some major police vs citizen movement there. Reminds me of LA in the 80s. Alot of robberies goin on up there too.

Gas in that area is in 2.80-2.99 mark over the last 6 months. 1 bedroom apartments are probably in the 500-750 range. I pay 854 for a 2 bedroom in eugene (free cable and covers everything but electricity). one of my friend in corvallis pays 660 for a 1 bedroom. Not sure what she's close to though. Being that it's a major college town without alot to do, apartments are considered cheap for the area. I can see albany being cheaper since they don't have the draw of the university.

For comparison's sake, in washington i had a 2 bedroom for 640 (covered all utility) but toss in 110 bucks a month for cable with HD programming. So this feels more expensive to me since i'd been conditioned to paying less AND i take home less even though i got a raise with the promotion and relocation.
