So i thought i had an idea of how to distinguish the two but now im not really sure. What are the main differences between the two variants? How do you tell them apart? I think i heard somewhere that venezuelans have diamond-shaped black markings, and columbians have round black markings.

is this accurate? anything else?

Here is what I posted in yet another thread in this forum. I simply cannot believe this "problem" keeps coming up in every thread regarding orinocensis.
Guys,
All orinos, regardless of where they were collected, are highly variable. I disagree that any one person can distinguish a Colombian orino from a Venezuelan orino simply based on appearance. And don't forget that many of the orinos exported from Colombia were actually collected in VZ. That has been a widely known fact for many years. I am quite surprised that no one else has mentioned that (as far as I know).
Hope that helps calm they hysteria a little.

This is just an observation but from what I have seen the guys that post pics of their "Columbian" Orinos the fish have ALOT more blue in their dorsal and tail then the Venezuelan do. There are quite a few members that have the supposed Columbian variant and all of them have alot of blue. I have the Vens myself and they show a little blue in the tail but nothing like the Columbo's do.
