A couple of months ago i set up my tank and added a 3in. ornate bichir and a 4 in. jardini arowana. I havent had any problems betweeen the fish and i recently added an irredesent shark.

I know that ornates are secretive/nocturnal, but is there any way that i could see him more often???? I have one side heavily planted with a cave kinda in the middle of the plants and then i have 1 plant at the other end of the tank. I never see him swim, really the only time i see him is when he sticks his head out of his cave.

I was just wondering if there is anything that i could do that would make him come out around the tank more often. Like adding more plants maybe,, or rocks,, any suggestions would be helpful

2 reasons make it hides, 1) it likes to hide in cave (its nature); 2) the pressure from jardini makes it hides. The solution would be redecorate to take out the cave (but, that makes the ornate exposed under the aggressiveness of the JAR), or seperate JAR from the ornate. Both seem to be not what you want. Guess you can see it only during feeding period.

My ornate was the same when I first brought him home and I had him with angels, not a jardini. It took about two months before he adjusted. Give it some more time.

My ornates were completly nocturnal until they got some size to them as atated above
ive it time to settle and get some size. Also watch the jardidni as they mature they tend to
be very intolernt of tankmates-Anne

yep. Its just how they are. had a couple allways hiding. If you want to see him you have to remove hiding places. I did that now the bastard has taken to hiding under my java moss.

get some moonlights maybe

I was lucky enough to find an ornate just slightly over 2 in. and I have a senegalis with him and other small fish. When I saw the ornate in the store he stayed on the bottom but upon getting him home he hid behind the filter near the top, rested on top the heater or thermometer and only occaisionally going to the bottom to lay around the plants but mostly only staying on the bottom during feeding time. I do not know if it is because he is so small but he does not like hiding in my tank as far as being in something like a cave.

it would adjust, but generally bichirs loves a good hiding spot. but I would keep an eye on the Jar, there has beet a lot of sad endings w/ this set-up. I hope yours work out.

its been 6 months i bought mine, and i only seeing her not more than 10 times for a few seconds...sometimes was suprised that she growth bigger than the last time i saw her....:shakehead
