Hello,

A long while ago I was told that I could keep a delhezi (which usually reach 14") in a 55 gallon 12" wide tank.

So why can't an ornate, (which I'm told usually reach about 20" in Aquaria) live in an 18" wide 75 gallon?
I'm not trying to be pushy, I just genuinely don't get why it wouldn't be possible.

Thanks!

Could you post a pic of this 75 gallon? It seems like every other day you post a thread of a new stock idea for your 75g...

Well a del really shouldn't be in a 55. The only thing that would be O.K. in a 55 would be a senegal because they generally stay small. An ornate you could possibly put a CB in there but i wouldn't recommend it if you don't plan on upgrading. Regardless whether it's CB or WC and ornate will usually get pretty big so i would say the 18" width would be an absolute minimum for an ornate, but IMO i wouldn't get it if you don't plan on upgrading.

A 20 inch ornate definately CAN'T be in a 75 gallon tank. A fish that size should be in at least a 150 gallon tank.

Other than that, ornates that you find in the lps are usually captive bred so they max out at 12 to 16 inches. You can keep that in a 75 gallon for a year in a half and then you need to upgrade.

Wild caught ornates can reach 18 inches+ so you'll definitely need a tank bigger than 150 gallons.

Not to be rude but every body seems to be throwing around gallon sizes I thought that Bichirs need a big foot print, room to turn around so wouldnt it help to give a foot print that you suggest? Like a 60x24x??? would be ideal without breaking the bank

We are but just not stating the foot print size lol. Like in a standard 75 it ha an 18" width and if you have a 150+ it usually has a bigger width. So we are kinda assuming.

But yeah to adequately house an ornate you'd probably need a larger foot print than 18" especially if it's a WC.
