Right now im looking after a ornate bichir. He did great the first 5 days or so and then i came in one morning and he seems destresed, hes breathing deeper, hes scaled are standing on end, and you can almost see hes veins on underbelly are bright red! Nothing in the tank has changed iv been feefing him bloodworms, krill, and and sinking pellets.Iv been testing water daily and its steady at ammonia 0,nitrite 0,nitrate 10.ppm, pH 7, KH 2degrees. have done a few waterchanges and its been about 3 days and he still loooks pretty unhappy, and idea what could be goin on? greatly appriciated. thank you.

What else if anything, are you keeping in the tank as far as fish/critters?

Sounds like a bacterial infection, maybe bloat/dropsy, if the scales are standing up.

I would try using some Maracyn one or two.

Best of luck, I'll keep an eye out for your response so that we can hopefully sort this out.

:iagree:

Sounds like bloat; man that sux; but master odd ball got a great sticky about treating bloat, and did wonders for my yellow lab. just go to the search forums window and type bloat treatment.

Hello,

there is another possibility ...

I'd bought a little ornate short time ago.

After 5 days (also!) he was breathing very hars, couldn't dive and also had these visible veins on the belly. When he tried to dive he drifted up to the surface with his tail first.

I was thinking he would die!

I discussed the theme with some dealers and members of a biologic institute with much experience here in Germany and i heared something to understand this ornate crisis:

Some dealers are putting oxygene in the transport package before one will leave the shop to go home. A very old and also bad tradition - especially polypterids are dying after this procedure. The dealers told me that many polypterids and also snakeheads are dying after this ...
Fortunately my ornate didn't die - after two days he was already OK.

My English is too bad to explain the biological facts of the lethality of such a oxygene treatment but it is a fact for me!

But i will not say anything wrong - it is still another possibility ...

Greetings and good luck

Uwe

Never thought of that

''My English is too bad to explain the biological facts of the lethality of such a oxygene treatment but it is a fact for me!'' its a lot better than some I've on forums-Anne

if you want to do the biological facts in German go ahead i'l run it thru babel fish
(should be fun)

hello thanks for all the input. Right now he is in with some small tiretrack eels and a small pleco. He's the biggest fish in there, and i have seen no aggression between any of them. I took a look at oddballs bloat discussion, il also see if i cna get aholf of soem mericyne 2 sp? thanks againe.
