So i walk in the front door and my wife tells me she saw the stupid bala nip at my ornate!! Made a lil white spot on the top of it's head! Couldn't belsive it. As I was stand at the door in disbelief, I take one step forward and the ornate goes from perfectly calm to leaping out of the tank!! Flopped on top of the galss for a sec then slid off into a random bucket of random water next to the tank. Finally was able to net it and put back in the tank!

Which brings me to my questions. It kinda scuffed up it's top lip and all but tore off one of it's nostrils. It's still somewhat attached and wondering if a) It will be ok and b) will it heal or grow back in another one?

Will post pictures tomorrow once the stress of it leaping and me getting rid of the stupid bala.

Just keep the water clean, and it should heal fine. Bichirs like to jump out of tanks, so I wouldn't attribute it to your Bala Shark. I had a big Lap that jumped twice, crashing straight through the lid. The second time, it was not so lucky. I found it too late all dried up.

It will grow back. That happen to my endlii. One of my other bichirs ripped it of completely. Don't remember how long it took to grow back but for sure it will grow.

I think it had already soomewhat stressed out from the stupid bala. After i put the ornate back in the tank I stood back for a lil bit to see if the bala would nip at the ornate again. Sure as s***, nip it in the exact same spot. Iv'e never seen that bala or any other one for that matter nip at another fish. thought it was strange.

Yeah, I'm not doubting you that the Bala stressed it out, and perhaps that is why it jumped that time. Just wanted you to beware that it wouldn't be unlikely for a non stressed out Poly to jump out of the tank too. It happens a lot.

Thanks! I thought i had coverd all the spots it could fly out but apparently i was worng. Looks like i gotta cut the plastic a lil tighter.

Man that sucks i hate when fish jump out, especially really nice ones :naughty:. A month or so ago i had a red finned loach jump out of my tank. It must have been there 6-8 hours before i noticed, and the loach was stiff as a board but still breathing. So i promptly netted the fish and held it near the filter output to force water through his gills.

I kept the fish netted overnight by propping the handle in the lid so the bottom of the net was still in the water, and i also left it near the filter output. I left it there for two reasons 1. to pump it full of oxygen 2. i have other fish like Skunk Loaches and such in there that would nip at an injured fish.

When i got up the morning to my surprise the loach was still alive so i let it go and it swam away! I thought for sure that sucker was dead when i seen it on the floor dry and stiff with nasties all over it from flopping like 6 feet from the tank. It hid behind some wood for awhile and i didn't see it too often. I noticed it was turning white on some places of the fish, the next day it was like totally white and weird looking all over, i thought it was cooked for sure. Somehow from good tank maintenance and catching it in time it survived and doing better than ever! You can't tell anything ever happened to it and it eats like a hoss.

I read another thread around here before about a Bichir jumping out and drying up but still living. I guess its cool to have zombie fish anyway.
So that's my personal experience with a good result. Basically just like Angler said, keep it clean and you should be alright :D GL
