Ok, I know that this could indeed be very normal, but my ornate lungs are slightly out farther than what I see on pics. It has a fan similar to a mudpuppy but not as extreme as the mudpuppy or water dog. I know that nothing may be wrong, but when I see other members ornates posted I don't see the fan.:screwy: I looked through the forum and couldn't find any info on this or even a picture. Is this something I should be worried about? This has been my first ornate and I am just looking out for him.:D

Your talking about the big fluffy red things comeing off of its gills right ?

Those are called external gills totally normal all small polys have them

Though it is true that all small polys exhibit features common in juvenile amphibia (and this is why this is my favorite, and perhaps most basal, family of primitive fish), some may retain this feature throughout adulthood, though it may be an indication of low temperature and/or low oxygenation, as neoteny is indicated in tiger salamander populations.

hope u didn't have to leave those beautiful fish to lfs but, this is a natural phenomenon with this kind of fish from stress. hopefully u just got them but if not then check the ph. nitrates and w/e else. GL

Thanks I was just checking to be sure, I don't see them on my other polys, but they are bigger. Better to be on the safe side. I wanted to check this before I went to bed just incase it might have been bad.
