hi,can an ornate live with smaller bichirs eg ornate is 9 inches and a delhezi is 4 inches.or do you think the ornate will gobble it up???

i think it should be ok. i think that delhezis get alot more girth than ornates and thats not much of a size difference anyway.

It'll probably depend on your ornate's personality but personally I wouldn't risk it. I would grow the delhezi a few more inches before putting it with the ornate. The ornate should be slowing down on growth so the delhezi should be able to gain some so difference in sizes wouldn't be as big.

Ornates not only get almost twice the length of a delhezi but they also gain a lot more girth compared to a delhezi.

....but at least they get 2 types! If they know about sene's and ornates they may be able to order in some others.

I get the deer in the headlights look if mention poly's at our LFS. They agree to check out the price & availabiity with their supplier, and after a ton of nagging you get in one fish, high $$, likely a senegal, maybe who knows?? as their supplier misidentifies regularly.

It took me a year to get my new ornate, and I'm amazed it's actually an ornate they brought in.....

O

same here, we ger ornates and sens in, they thought they had a congicus, were selling it for 69.99 and it was a sen that was a bit more of a brown (but barely, I have bigger shade diff in my tank because some live up top and some live near the bottom) than the others.
Anyways, I put a couple 4" albino sens in with my 10" ornate, 8" and some big sens that I wasn't worred about at all, the ornates though.... It worked out alright, the albinos have got to a decent size I'm not worried, but I did spend a few hours in front of the tank watching or any signs or aggression or hunger, they were fine. I also threw extra food in the tank 2 times a day so they were too fat to even fit one in, or even care. Also kept live feeders for about a week or two just to keep any thoughts of cannibalism at bay.
I also rearranged the tank and cleaned it really well to be sure any territory issues were reduced, made sure there were new places to hang out and some that were too small for the ornate to get into, just so they could hide out
