Ornate slimecoat + fine sand

I transferred my big ornate (who now measures around 17"!) into the 5' 160g tonight, only to discover that the white sand I had used as substrate is not only so fine he always stirs it up, but it also sticks to him and after 5 minutes it looked like he'd been rolled in icing sugar! I've removed the sand and added stresscoat, is there anything else I can do to help him get rid of the sand?

My albino bichir sometimes rolls in my black sand and gets a few particles on her, or when I am working in the tank and she freaks out she gets particles all over. Doesn't seem to bother her at all so I haven't done anything about it. Their scales are pretty tough to boot.
