Hi all, I have seen an Ornate that is about 25cm in length at my LFS. It used to have a severely bent spine which over time has cured itself and now it looks a lot straighter, but it is still a little crooked. Will it ever be straight again? Is there any disadvantage to purchasing a fish with this condition? It seems active and feeds well, and looks generally healthy.

Will it ever be straight again? probably not 100% straight
Is there any disadvantage to purchasing a fish with this condition? Once a vertebrae
goes out of alignment its easier for it to do it again ask anyone with a back problem.
other than that it should live a long life-Anne

yeah other than looking weird it should be able to live a normal life.

Hey! you think there might be a market for fish chiropractors? I'm thinking business op here :)

Thanks for the responses, I'm still tempted to buy it because it is a good price.

One of my poly's has a slightly hunched back. Makes him look even more badass.

Seriously though, I've never seen any problems related to it and he is my favorite personality and activity-wise.

Ornates around here are pretty expensive, usually $400 - $500 I think.

I bought a baby senegal from PetsMart forever ago - it was about 2'' at the time, and severly deformed. Found out from a worker that when it came in on the shipment, it had a rubber band stuck around its midsection, which they were able to cut off. I felt sorry for the little bugger, so I promptly bought him. He's now around 5'', and sometimes I wonder if putting him out of his misery would have been a wiser decision. As a whole, he's completely healthy and eats like a horse. His growth rate has been VERY pathetic ever since I got him, and watching him swim hurts a bit. It's very sad looking - his injury is midway down his spine and the back half of his body doesn't move. His head and forebody has to do twice the work to drag the rest of him around. He doesn't let it get him down, and lives normally. I have seen NO change in his condition since I brought him home.

Just some food for thought.
