Hello

I`ve just bought an ornate. Its about 2 inces long.
How fast does it grow? And how big does It get in captivity? I just cant wait til that cool fish gets bigger.

Is it smart to buy smaller fish, so that he/she can hunt on some live prey? Is this usual?

:D :D :D

Hey there-

Your ornate will get up to about 2 feet. He'll grow quickly up until about a foot and then slow down. Our ornate we got in April last year at about 3 inches is now a foot.

You can feed them live food. Guppies are probably the best feeder fish you could give them. (There's lots of discrepancies on whether feeders are good or bad). They'll also eat worms, and crickets. Those are better for the bichir as they are lower in fat content. We feed our bichir, guppies on occasion, worms a few times a week, and whatever crickets the archers don't eat.

They're awesome fish. Enjoy!

Providing enough food, it can grow up near 15~16" in 2 yrs. The growth rate is slow after then, but, it can continue to grow probably up to 23" (max I've heard). As for the food, I personally dump in feederfishes for them to hunt. However, most others would advice you not to in case of some illness.

Thanks for the information.

Now I just bought 8 neon tetras, and released them in my thank. The ornate hunts them already, but the tetras just seems a bit to quick for him.
Very fun entertainment. :) :) :)

Still 8 neons left, I guess he is not the best hunter you can have in the tank :)
But he dosen`t seem to give up. I wonder if he catch any when the light goes out. :grinno:

ornates can really pig out. i had a 3 inch aro in the tank with my 5 inch ornate at the time......one morning i work up to no aro and a very fat ornate!
