I have heard ornatum sometimes are finiky eaters. What's everyone feeding their ornatum. I fed mine some worms the other day, and he loved them, pellets hes not to fond of. Anyone know what they eat most of in the wild?

Also I heard feeding umbee live was no good? t or f

Thanks MFK!

Feeding live primarily for any fish is a no no. Unless you propagate your own feeders(convicts for instance) you risk introducing disease and parasites. On the ornatum I have no idea no experience with them sorry

I got some from Tangled Up In Cichlids when they were tiny and they took to small new life spectrum pellets right away. Admittedly, they don't get much variation. Just NLS pellets, Omega One flakes, and frozen food. If you haven't already, try NLS pellets. All my fish love 'em.

Thanks guys, how about like red worms. If i propagate red worms would it be safe to fed the fish the red worms ?

Habent you had these for a while now? I would think pellets would be a non issue if fed pellets exclusively. Problems arise when live or frozen is often fed resulting in them not wanting pellets. On sensitive fish like ornatum I would stick to pellet only and make them eat it or starve lol (theyll get hungry enough to eat the pellets) good luck

Yea I have had him for awhile and he does eat the pellets but not a lot and he always looks skinny,,

i have been having the same problem with my ornatum, they wont eat pellets and my cobra pikes tear the pellets up, but all the ornatum do is whatch them next zI will try worms

Mine has been eating Hikari Carnivore Sticks and NLS 4.5mm. He's been picky and I did fatten him up on some rosie red feeders. He is about 9" and I would not recommend feeders, I was using the feeders to bulk up my pike cichlids for breeding and he went nuts on them.
