My LFS recently received someone else's order and sent back everything that wasn't wanted... except one tiny ropefish that was found on the floor hours after the boxes had been picked back up. Now the QT guy is trying to find a home for this poor fish. All I can think of is whose floor is this fish going to die on?

Before I commit to taking this ropefish (that is no bigger around than a pencil and only about 6" long), what tricks can be implemented to keep these rascals in the dang tank? I had one years ago and the only way I could do it was to drill holes in a 12 qt. rubbermaid, put it in, snap the lid on and submerse it in the tank.

I have absolutely no trouble keeping mine in.

Get a glass hood, and cut the things on back so ONLY your filters will fit in them very tightly. In fact, if you have canister filters don't make a cut out, drill or cut circles that the intake and output will barely fit in and nothing else can get through. Any open parts whatsoever need to be sealed with something he can't push through.

You absolutely won't keep this guy in with a plastic hood unless it's heavily weighted down or locked somehow. Mine can open my thick glass hood to my 90g if it's not shut all the way. Another thing with the plastic hoods is you'll usually end up with gaps in the back no matter what, so they don't work too well.

You could also cut a 'line' to the actual circular opening that will wrap to the exact dimension of the canisters tubes.

I may have to do this myself and take pics to show what I mean.

I have a huuuge gap behind my lids and both my ropes are fine. Buut I do plan on implementing the plastic splash guards because my ropes are still sub adults.

Duct tape, lol.

That or get a new piece and recut.

Mine would crawl into the HOB filter and find his way out. I haven't had a poly abandon ship yet.

how does it get into the filter?

try leaving a space between the surface of the water and the top of the tank.
ive never had a bichir try to jump ship yet.
