just wondering if oscars aggression was related to the number of oscars in an environment. right now i have 2 oscars in w my gar. i have to feed constantly to keep them from picking on the gar. this is an unlikely combo but ppl have done it in the past and i desperatly want it to work. would 1 oscar be better than 2 or would it be better to have say 3? thanks for your help

Many factors come in to play, Tank size, filtration, other fish in the tank etc.. From what i have read, O's are mellow with the exception, if u fit in their mouth then ur food..

oscars are generally mellow compaired to say the para. family of cichlids, but are still too aggro for oscars many times. some people happen to get lucky. what i would normaly say to minimize aggression is to add dithers only the dithers are a bad combo for the gar too. silver dollars are a particular favorite of mine as a dither but the shiny fast movement tends to drive gar to slam themselves into the wall at full speed. possibly put something else in the tank not shiny and not to skitzo that the oscars can pick on that also wont freak the gar out.

I took the risk and introduced a Gar in with my very laidback and gentle Oscar.
This is how the act together:

Now i added a new Oscar and all is well.
The Oscars and gar respects eachother but i do handfeed the gar, to make sure he gets enough fish.
It totally depends on the character of your O's, and the spookyness of the Gar.
But i say they need a 180Gl or bigger tank to give the enough territory.
This is yesterday and they all seem pretty happy.

3 is a bad number for Oscars, i wouldn't go there!

Oscars are usually more aggressive towards other Oscars than other species. If you have two Oscars and they decide to begin mating they might not be willing to live with anything. Oscars can be much less aggressive with more but usually that refers to how they treat each other and not so much different species.

On the other hand, Oscars are New World Cichlids and just when we think we've figured out anything about their compatability we get one with a nasty attitude that goes psycho on anything that shares its tank space.

it all starts with how big your tank is? filtration? other tankmates?

If you have all of them in a 75-125 or something like that your going to have some aggression

I checked your profile and i'd say a 120Gl is asking for territorial issues.
My 180Gl is just big enough for 2 O's and a gar, that is for now.
They may even outgrow the 180.
