Oscar and BGK alright together?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oscars grow to about 12inch in total some times a little bigger , about an 1inch -1.5inch a month and sorry i am not sure if you could put them both together .

the oscars grow at a great speed till they reach 8", and will try and eat anything that is an easy meal and will out compete the BGK for food, so its a no no for them to be kept together

In a year, most oscars will be 10 inches or so - they usually grow 1 to 1.5 inches a month till they get up around 8 inches and then slow down till they get to their full size of 12 to 14 inches. I wouldn't put an Oscar and a BGK together for the reasons stated, unless it was a huge tank.

I have two black ghost knives... each over 10" long... one 3 years old the other 5 years old... both have been raised with SA/CA Cichlids of comparible size with no special care offered to the BGK... both of them were raised with Oscars as well as others... Both have done absolutely fine...

After years of watching BGKs fearlessly interact with my big Cichlids I see absolutely no reason not to raise them togehter. I feel that those who suggest against it are simply repeating internet nonscense they have read elsewhere.

I agree with nutcase-as long as they're similiar in size anyway-they can be in the same tank.I've had them together in my personal experiences.

when i first joined this site i did the exact same thing with no problems at all.just make sure you have a couple of hiding spots like caves for him.;)

I just read some similar threads by scrolling my browser down. Same type of topics and it seems like this combo works from experienced responses. Nutcase was one of the people in those threads among others. I think its safe to say as long as the BGK is bigger or close in size and has a place to hide it should be fine. It would probbaly be a bit more risky with some other cichlid like a jaguar or red devil though.

I house the BGK with a Perch prior and the perch was really aggressive, but he never bother the BGK at all, in fact the perch was somewhat intimidated by the BGK it seemed.

In my experience... Cichlids have a social order to themselves even amongst different species. BGKs do not fit anywhere into their social order and the Cichlids react as if they "don't understand" the BGK and simply avoid interaction (aggression or otherwise). The only times I've seen my Cichlids and BGKs interact is when the BGKs were attacking the Cichlid's nest to eat their eggs... and both of my BGKs are exceptionally effective at eating Cichlid eggs, even when the Cichlids object...

I'd mix them, but the tank has to be large enough, otherwise the only issue would be providing enough hiding spots for the knife
