Hey im trying to find a cichlid that would go with my jack dmepsey well (by well i mean not completely killing the other fish) my jack dempsey is 2 inches and the fish im gonna buy will be 1-2 inches also the jack dempsey is female so would a red devil or oscar be better with him? :newbie: :help2:

How big is the tank? The red devil will kill the JD pretty quick, the Oscar should be fine if you have a big tank. My 10" male RD lives in a 75 by himself, RDs are really aggressive. Do some research online an see what would work.

im probably gonna go with the oscar because they are less aggressive and wont kill the jack dempsey and i have had oscars before i think im gonna wait until i get another tank to keep a red devil

my male jd (4 inch) is currently living with alot of friends! and he is a little bigger than most of his friends but shows no aggression unless he doesn't want anyone in his cave but just a little chase!

his friends are as follows but it will really depend on your tank size...

salvini...... female a little smaller than the jd but his favourite friend possible girl friend! lol

super red seveurum ..... 1 larger 2 smaller ... he pays them no attention at all

Vieja synspila Redhead Cichlid, 1 large male 11 inches boss of the tank the jd stays away 1 same size female no aggresion

Pepper Cichlid 'vieja argentea' this gets large too about 12 inches but mine is only 2 inches at the mo and no agression.

good luck with your choice and i hope these help, and dont give you too many different ideas!

but if you are set on either a red devil or oscar i would agree with above the red dev will kill the jd so oscar it is!

What kind of oscar are you thinking of choosing?

Red devil will definitely kill the jd. Oscar will be the best choice among the mentioned two if you want your jd to be living in your aquarium.

How big is the tank?

OP, I'm not trying to be rude, but you never answered the original question. Without the tank size, it's like asking a chemistry science question without all of the variables. A person could have an explosion on their hands. It doesn't matter which fish will get along better with your dempsey if you're cramming them in a 20 gallon, the tank is already too small for your JD by himself once he hits maturity. I think most everyone would agree the oscar would be the better pick between the two but unless you have a 75 gallon tank or larger to put them in a couple months, it's not even worth it to try. So how big is the tank? We can't do your situation justice without that info.

Oh crud sorry about that this was a long time ago and I forgot and I actually decided to keep it alone in a 55 gallon because she isn't very aggressive so I figured the oscar would kill it and I might have bought about 100 gallon if I got a jd and oscar because they are huge (well for me) anyways the jd is alive and happy by itself :D
