Can you keep them together? will the oscar try to eat them even if near full size?

Yes you can keep them together but the pictus HAVE to be full grown before the oscar gets full grown otherwise it will try and eat it but the spines will cut into the oscars throat and get lodged. You will not be able to get it out without killing one or both fish.

Is there a little better catfish to put in with one oscar than pictus?

The so-called 4 line pictus seem to go well with them IME. As long as they aren't at a size the oscar would consider eating them.

my oscars never bother bottom dwellers

The one I had tried to eat the pleco once a month. I think a pictus would be a bad idea.

my oscar doesn't bother with anything unless it looks food sized and swims at mid-level. He takes bites out of my goldie, but the goldie never learns to leave the oscar alone.

But dont the 4 lined pictus like to be more solitary than the regular spotted pictus? I wanted about 8 of them schooling and moving.

You can house pictus, just depends on the oscar itself. Most will not try and eat them. However if the oscar does attempt to, try dividing the tank for a few days.
