my 2.5-3 inch oscar had white stringy feces today. i regularly feed him hikari gold and some green peas once in a while. could this be a intestinal infection like websites say? he eats like normal and doesnt seem to have a loss in apetite. no bloat no nothing. he looks perfectly fine. if it is a disease or infection is there a prevention? medicinal or homemade.

could most deffinantly be something inside. most likely intestional worms. medicated foods will sometimes work for this but you may want to find a med. thats a bit more direct once you figure out what it is exactly. white feces isnt all that normal and a lot of the times they get these problems from poor quality feeders or even a lack of nutritous foods. check your water quality and keep that as good as you can and find those meds and this problem should clear up. again im not sure if its intestional worms or what but start there and narrow it down. also if you can get a good clear picture then post that, and it will help all of us determine what it may be.

i dont think a picture would do much good. he looks perfectly normal like my other oscar. no unusual bumps. i did feed him earthworms that i found in my garden. i might have screwed up. could this be the reason?
damn the garden probably has manuer and whatever stuff my parents added. shoulda thought about it first. but i fed him earthworms that i picked out a couple times before too.

Did you prepare anything on the earthworms before feeding them to your fish? This could be slime coating by earthworms. Observe for a few more days while feeding with commercial foods and don't feed it earthworms for awhile.

From the size of the fish I assume it is pretty new. Oscars are one of the fish that I treat with metronidazole anytime I get them as they are prone to hexamita, a protozoal infection that has a symptom of white or clear slimy feces. It is also a suspected cause of HITH. The med is safe and won't hurt the BB or fish.

Just remember that hexamita generally manifests as a low grade long term infection that only occassionally shows symptoms. If the fish becomes stressed the disease can flare up fatally, it also lowers the ablity of the fish to resist other diseases.

it was actually salmon that i fed my fish. i saw the same kind of poop after feeding salmon and remembered i fed him that last time too.
