sorry I can't attach photos, recently my oscar has been acting more skittish ( he/she's usually very owner interactive). he/she's appetite has not been so good and it usually just spits out the food. All my O's been doing is digging a hole in the sand by gulping it up and spitting it out and looks like it's clearing a space and then kind of gaurding it, I put my siphon near it and the O lunged at it so I backed off. the O's poop was normal but attached by a white string so I thought he might have indegestion. But he seemed to purk up today a bit and I fed him/her some raw frozen peas ( I think I heard that helps with indegestion?) what does it sound like my fish has? ( please not internal parasites:nilly:)

How old is your O? I see that she is all alone, did you just pick her up?

I picked her up in april . She's about eight-nine inches now I'm not sure how old she is probably less than a year. are you saying it is a she?

yes, i'd have to say that would be a female.
not totally posative though.
she's probably just marking her territory.
they become more territorial once they reach maturity.
some o's turn out very aggressive.
in your case, it seems like you have a really aggressive oscar.
your oscar isn't eating a lot? that's non-sense haha, oscars love to eat.

Dracknurd, the eyespot is in male and females both :-) Some fish don't have an eyespot and that's ok, too.
Ctonpoma, our Oscar is reaching the age of sexual maturity right now judging by his/her size, that would explain the different behavior. Throw a few extra water changes in there for good luck and all will be well in a few wks if that's all it is.

Hi Twisted,
Really that is interesting I have always been under the impression that was a characteristic of males, but not that I haven't been wrong before. :D What is a defining characteristic of the females? both mine are posted above and I gave up spawning after I was improperly informed.

usually females get the bump that yours has on the forehead.
my female has it.

another defining characteristic would be laying eggs lol.
no mates though, so i doubt their would be any spawning going on.

your oscar has some nice fins to!!!!!

Only the Oscars know for sure. Oscars are one of the fish you can't tell the difference by sight. I can get a pretty good idea sometimes by putting a known sex fish (like my male Severum or male Green Terror) in with a particular Oscar. Both those males will tear up other male cichlids but they act like lovesick puppies with female Cichlids (or run from them). Guys. They're all the same lol
