hi... I just noticed that my Oscar is breathing heavy.my ammonia is at 0 but my nitrate and nitrite are a little high. I just did a 30 percent water change last night. I really don't know what to do . he was fine till this morning. he is still eating just breathing heavy. any help please

How long have your nitrate and nitrite been high? And what is "high" in ppm? Have you added any chemicals or anything to the tank in that time period?

I got a better test kit. I was using strips. my ammonia is at 1.0ppm...nitrite 0.25ppm and nitrate 0. what should I do. can this be because I bought a new filter 2 weeks ago. I have a hw304b canister filter. with a 125 gallon tank. should I buy something to get the fish tank to cycle. fish tank as been up and running for about 2 months. and something to lower the levels in the tank. any help thank you

If you replaced filters and didn't use any of the old media the tank is going through a mini cycle. Do daily 25% water changes add aquarium salt at 1 tablspoon per ten gallons. Check water perameters until you see the numbers come back to normal levels.

yea I didn't use any old media everything was brand new.. how often should I clean out my filter. because I just cleaned out the filter didn't clean any media just all the crappy stuff on the bottom. should I have not done that?

Yeah I would leave the filter alone and only do maint once or twice a month and never clean the bio media thoroughly, every once in a blue moon rinse it lightly in water from your aquarium in a bucket.
