my oscar chiclid has hole in the head. if he dies should I cycle new water in his tank. or get a new oscar imidietley. I do not want to wait a month to cycle new water. so do I have to put new water in his tank:FIREdevil

You should keep a goldfish instead. Clearly you don't know what a cichlid is or needs, and you also don't seem to care.

First of all your tank is too small for ANY oscar, they will all eventually die because they will be cramped and find it impossible to move around comfortably. Not to mention their huge bioloads, you won't be able to keep up with the maintenance. And then there's the feeder goldfish. Basically you're doing everything wrong. My advice is to do a lot of research on whatever you plan on keeping BEFORE you get it, stick to smaller cichlids... set up a water change schedule and get a high quality pellet food. Good luck.

my 55 gallon is not a standerd 55 gallon. it is deeper and taller than a standerd 55 gallon and is about 2-2 half feed long

goldfish are for beginers. I looked it up before I bought him and some people said 50 gallon or more and some people said 70 gallon or more and my book said 60 gallons. and the worker at petsmart said 50 gallons. what about a 65 gallon :irked:tank

I personally wouldn't put an Oscar in a tank that small. Part of the reason he probably contracted HITH was because you could not keep up with waterchanges for such a large waste producer in such a small tank. The smaller the tank, the faster the waste builds up - thus needing waterchanges a WHOLE LOT more often. I would stick with smaller cichlids in that small of a tank. Unless you can afford a 75 - 90 gallon for an Oscar, I wouldn't get another. P.S. NEVER LISTEN TO PETSMART OR PETCO

that was kind of offensive cobra snakehead. I now more about fish than you think.
The names of members are located at the top of the box next to their posts, The second name is title that changes with their increasing post counts. The person you're referring to is cacichlids not Cobra Snakehead. I've seen you do this on other posts so i thought I'd help you out.

To your question, I would suggest that you steer away from Oscars or any other large growing cichlids in a tank of your dimensions. There are many smaller cichlids that are better suited for your tank. I wouldn't rush to add anything in your tank until you get it in order. Make sure that you change the water and filter if need be. Those filter pads for HOB filters usually have to be changed every 30 days. Find a good quality food to feed your fish about twice a day. Feeders like goldfish should not be included in this diet. Weekly to Bi-weekly (50% weekly for me) deep water changes are one of the best ways to keep your fish healthy and disease-free. If you have trouble keeping your water at a warm temp you should invest in a heater. Prolonged exposure to cool water can cause problems for many cichlids. I don't know the source of your current problems so i just gave you a few pointers to lead you in the right direction. One last thing. Don't think that all workers at chain stores are misleading. There are some that will honestly give you good information. But then there are many that just don't know much about the fish they are selling. Make it a habit of reading as much as you can on the fish that you are interested in rather than getting all of your knowledge from a pet store or a few people online. Good luck!
