I was part of a thread a while back where there was a debate on the cause of the all too common Oscar chin pimple. My water parameters were always good but my oscar developed this unsightly and what I refused to believe was a healthy condition. I did manage to get it cleared up and thought I’d share with others what I am convinced did the job.... decaying organic matter.... especially where your fish tends to dig most.... it’s probably the same place it poops most. Keep that area free of any decaying organic matter. Even if your nitrates are at 5ppm if your fish is rubbing his chin in poop and decaying food then it only makes sense an infection / chin pimple could result. I used to gravel vac lightly in this area because that’s where my O would pout while I did water changes and she’d get so upset when I pushed her away. Once I realized the likely problem and focused cleanup in this area her pimple cleared and has stayed that way for 6 months.

Thought I’d share.

My oscar has that right now she has laid eggs with it so i assume shes healthy. Too bad the male didnt fertilize them correctly the 2 times shes laid them.

Maybe he doesn’t like girls with acne? I have no doubt mine was healthy despite the pimple and my maintenance routine was solid. I’m just highlighting that keeping the area extra clear of organic decay where she spends 90% of her time resulted in a disappearance of the pimple within a month.

I would guess that since you’re breeding you’d be really avoiding disturbing where she is clearing for eggs? Wish I had space for a pair. Jealous :)
