i recently bought an O and have become quite fond of his personality so i decided to keep him. im wondering what is the best food I can get for him as a staple diet as well as what would be the best treats?

They tend to eat anything that fits in their mouth.

NLS pellets as a staple.

As a treat:
Frozen blood worms
Krill - brings out color
Peas - high fiber cleans them out.

Mealworms & crickets are a good live food.
Ghost shrimp, but risk of disease.
Avoid feeder fish, unless you raise yourself- tend to spread disease.

Can go on and on, these are the main items I feed, but mine have ingested a lot of other stuff.

As a staple I would use Hikari Food Sticks and as a treat I would use use freeze dried krill. Just my opinion, but I feed my fish about 15 different foods, so there is no staple for my fish.

I like nls, hicari, omega one as the staple for all of my cichlids. As treats for the oscars i;ve kept, i've used garden worms, nightcrawlers, crickets, meal worms(one to two a week), roaches, grass hoppers, other baby cichilds i had to cull, frozen shrimp or krill, freeze dried krill, and sometimes tilapia fillets from the store. Pretty much anything fish safe, never gold fish though.

there's more i've fed oscars but i can't think of anything else right now.
