My Oscar has recently developed white spots on the fins. It seems like his fins are now rotting away. Are there any way I can help the Oscar or will it fight it off over time

Suggest post some pics along with ur water parameters.

Do a 50% water change, put white spot medicine...if you have a heater put it, it will speed up the process...do the water changes every alternate day and add the medicine...(Do not feed the fish)

Its ill advised to offer a corse of action without having all the facts dear. Treating the symptoms doesn't do much good if the underlying causes are not addressed.

Oscars are a big dirty fish. If the tank is too small, underfiltered, and or not getting enough water changes, the OP can throw all the meds at this that he wants and its not going to change a thing.

Also salt will treat this as long as the water quality is good. No heavy meds needed.

I’m going to add onto what has been said already. Salt itself doesnt kill the adult stages of ich, it kills the young “baby” ich.
Raising the temperature speeds up the life cycle of ich making it reproduce faster and then die so the salt becomes effective sooner.

This is true of all ich meds tho. Harsher meds tho can push an already sick/stressed fish over the edge depending on how severe it is. When I first got into the hobby I killed quite a few fish keeping them in cramped, underfiltered, over medicated tanks

Hello; This.

Hello; fins rotting away suggests more than ick. Could be ick and a secondary infection. Also could be just a secondary infection and not ick. Any way not just ick alone.

Hello; This. If you cannot give water test results then tell us about the 1) tank size 2) water changed schedule 3) filtration 4) how many fish -what size fish. 5) what is the feeding schedule? What kind of food?

Hello; There is a sticky about ick in this forum.
