My Oscar fish keep on freaking out at night after I turn off the lights. They are in my bed room where I have a tv that is on after I turn off the lights also my laptop which leaves some light. They are in a 55 gallon long which has 2 top 75 filters and a small uv light. Tankmates are only a pike cichlid.

I personally would put the lights on a timer so the fish will learn and settle down right before the light goes off at the same time everyday.

Unfortunately that tank is too small for an oscar. Could be aggression after lights out. How long have you had them ?

Had them under a year they are about 7inch. But I think I figured it out I was looking at the water level and noticed it dropped alot since I filled it earlier and water had been dripping from my filters on to my extension cord that has all my equipment plugged in. Probably shocking the fish. :(

Theres more than one oscar ?

When you say the water dropped since your last water change that sounds like the water change was a while ago if evaporation really lowered the level that much.

How often and how much are you changing the water ?

you can see the water that was dripping in the pics also.

Once a week.

what do you exactly mean by freaking out?

when my Oscar was around that size, he would go into bulldozer mode every night around 9pm and try to smash everything in the tank. move driftwood and plants all over, spit gravel every where. it was actually pretty funny to watch.

if yours is doing something like this, then I would consider it normal.

also, if the behavior is only observed after lights out, I would dismiss the shock theory - unless you can pinpoint that they are only being shocked once the lights go off.

a 55 is too small a tank for 2 Oscars and a pike. just to maintain decent water quality your changes should be more like 3-4 times a week not one. if not don't be surprised when your Oscars gets hole in the head.

HTH, good luck.

Turn off all the light, my Oscar goes nuts at his own reflection if my room lights are off and the TV is on showing slight light.
