so i had two small plecos in with my oscar (3-4") and they became food after about two weeks... hungry bastard... anyway... i want to put another fish in there with him/her but i dont know what... small and cheap are what are in my budget right now so would a group of small tetras be out of the question if i give them enough hiding places... or would they just become food... give me some ideas

EDIT: oh yeah there were tons of places for the plecos to go hide but like to hang on the front glass

Most tetras will become food. You may want to try some larger barbs. They're fast and have an irregular shape so they're not as easy to swallow...doesn't mean that he won't find a way though. Maybe tiger barbs, buy a group and get a discount if possible. Eventually most fish will become oscar food though.

Yes out of the question.. I generally don't buy food that expensive for my fish LOL.. I would go with a JD, or a Gold Saum myself.. What is the water caspacity of your tank ?

its only a 50 gallon so i wanted to get something that would stay small... and would be smart enough to hide... i really like the look of silver dollars but they get pretty big (i think 8") and i dont really have the money to get a bigger tank (yet. only 3 more classes to take befor i get my biology degree, and a real job) and i would feel bad if they were cramped in there... maybe ill just leave him in there alone for a while

Alone would be best but you could try some large giant danios. They max at around 4" and are pretty fast. It will take awilhe for your oscar to grow large enough to eat them and even if he does get large enough he will still have to catch them (and he will eventually).

How about natives? Catch your own, just keep them in a quarantine tank for a couple of weeks to a month if posible. 10g tanks are great for 1-3 fish and they're cheap or you may ask around and fine free ones Check out your local http://www.freecycle.org/ .

Oscars are great, one of the few intelligent fish.
