Hi everyone I am new to posting to the forum, although I have read and used many of the articles on this site. I've had my Oscar now for about 6 months or so and I'm curious about the gender it would be cool if the name I picked went with the gender. I was unable to get a good picture of his blue acara tank mates to see about their gender but will upload soon.

It's really hard to find the gender on of "O". Venting will be your best bet. But if it lays eggs on a piece of slate.....then you need to find HER a mate.

oscars are monomorphic only way to tell is by venting

He means the only for sure way to tell is venting.

Oscars do tend to grow a little bit larger than females and their head tends to be more steep but this is not always the case. Going by looks I would guess yours is female but venting or finding eggs is the real sure fire way.

like everybody says its really hard to tell.
i ve had several mated couples of O's and can always see the female got a rounder body, i would say by looks yours its a female, but its just a guess;)

Venting is the only true and 100% guarantee way in finding out what gender your O is!!!!

Okay here comes the dumb question...How old do the O's need to be to be able to observe the vent size/shape or are the vents only visible during breeding?

The photo example show an obvious mature pair in the process of spawning. My O's are currently 6-7 inches and have definite differences in behavior and coloration, one very dark Tiger (all of the time) and one chocolate brown Tiger (until it's excited and then it gets darker).

The darker (and smaller) of the 2 seems to be more passive doing alot of side swimming and posturing when the larger is around.

i have one curiuos O who eats like a horse, the other just kinda sits there. both are about 3 inches long. both change color, but the lazy won't eat. he will eventually i guess.
