For almost two and half weeks not my oscar has been guarding and fanning a peice of slate and hasn't even left to eat. i tried to cover the slate with sand, but she simply removed the sand and continued to guard it with her life. will she eventually grow tired and stop or is there somthing i can do to get her mind off waiting for the non-existant fry??

also i was thinking of adding a few apple snails to the tank to act as a food source, i just don't want to be over run with snails and empty shells, has anyone tried to add snails and regretted it lol?

+1. Remove the slate and expect her to sulk for a few days. You could also try rearranging the tank to draw her attention back to reality. I've never heard about this behavior before!

thanks for the replies. I can't move the slate because its attached to a piece of driftwood and i tried to hide it under the sand but when she discovered it was there that when this all began lol the first time i covered it up i put a few rocks over it and she sulked but then moved all the river stones and dug it back up and resumed her duty lol

So she's cleaning the slate and guarding it as if waiting for a male or actually fanning the thing as if to keep eggs clean?

fanning the little bits of sand that she thinks are eggs lol

hmm that's wierd but kinda funny. I would put a pot or something over it, like stated above me, or do whatever you can to remove it. It wouldn't be too big of a deal but if she isn't eating over it you might need to do something...
