Hello everyone brand new to the forum and soon to be new to big fish. I am getting a 75 gallon in a few weeks and after I cycle it I want to get a tiger oscar my question is can I also put a black convict in with him? I know that 75 gallon is minimum for an Oscar I plan on doing an ehiem pro 3 2076 canister and also a emperor 400 hob would this be a good set up for a 75 gallon tank? Or do you reccomend different filters? Also would a custom under gravel jet set up be a good benefit? Any advice/help is greatly appreciated!!

Welcome!

My personal recommendation would be to not do a convict with the Oscar. Reasons being, Oscars generally grow faster, and if you get more than one convict you may end up with them breeding and they're very, very good parents. It's easy to end up with more fry than you want and they will defend their eggs and fry quite aggressively.

Filtration wise, canister/hob sounds good. When you say under gravel jet, do you mean something other than an under gravel filter?

I was only planning on one convict I don't want any pairs I'm to busy to want to deal with breeding but I also don't want to be unfair to my fish if the Oscar needs all 75 too himself then so be it my wife just wants more than one fish in the tank. The under gravel jet I seen on YouTube it supposedly help keep the gravel cleaner but im not sure it will be necessary as I will do weekly cleanings...

You should be fine with a single convict and a single oscar in your 75. Many will disagree. But as long as they are both singular and you stay up on your water quality, you should be fine. And ditch the gravel filter imo. Go with a couple good hang on backs and a couple sponges or something along those lines

Awesome thanks for the advice I have been out of the fish tank game for some time now are the bio wheels still the best option for a hob or is their one that will perform better for my future tank? Also I have never used a canister filter is their a specific substrate I should do for an Oscar? Thanks again for the help just want to make sure I do this tank right for the fish.

I agree skip the under-filter. I would go with a AC110 for your HoB, I do think this is best HoB out there IMHO. for media size/options and reliability. hanging one on each side of the tank will really help with mech filtration and leave the canister to more of a bio filter than a mech filtration. this is my fave setup for a 75/90/120 gallon tank.

I don't think I can convince my wife to let me spend that much on the filtration right now I will probably start with 1 hob and use it as pure mech maybe put some bio balls behind the foam...

Ok so I was looking at the price of the ehiem pro 3 wrong I am not going to be able to drop that much money at this time so what is my best option should I just do 2 ac110 hob's and get a canister when I can or do a ehiem classic with one ac110 hob or my last option a fluval fx4 by iself? My budget for filtration is $300

The canister filter you are planning or any other similar filter should be enough by itself, especially if you do your weekly water changes. Since your adding substrate, that should aid with the biological filtration as beneficial bacteria does grow on substrate.

People are informing you about filtration to maintain ideal water conditions, but excessive filtration won't be necessary as you will have 2 fish and both are hardy fish that don't need perfect water conditions.

Get the Oscar and Convict and enjoy the fish.

I use bio wheels and sponge filters I have a 60 gallon with 14 cichlids in it I do 20 gallon water changes weekly with Reverse osmosis water I have no aggression issues but will moving some of the larger fish into a 150 gallon and leaving some of the smaller fish in the 60
