I have had an Oscar for about a year and am currently working on cycling a 90 gallon to move him to. He is housed with two Tinfoil Barbs and a Pleco which will also be in the new tank.

I've been thinking if I am ever going to get him a friend or mate, now is the time. So, should I or should I not add another Oscar with him to the new tank? What would be the pros/cons? Also, I say 'he' but do not know for sure. If you buy into the fin shape theory 'he' would actually be a 'she'. So, do I have to find out definitly the sex and the sex of the new oscar, is it bad to have two males or two females? My goal isn't to have a mating pair, would be neat or I am fine without. I just enjoy my Oscar so much and like the idea of a second.

Also, can anyone suggest where I would beable to find and Oscar that is about a year old? LSP's here all have youngins or full grown ones.

Thanks, sorry so long winded.

no u will need a bigger tank for 2 Oscar.

I have to agree with the above poster. 90g is only enough for 1 Oscar fully grown. Consider adding 1-3 (depending on how small) small fish that the Oscar cannot fit into his mouth. If you don't have a 120g minimum, I'd advise not to get another Oscar.

In my experience, I've only found larger fish at better privately owned pet stores. Never at the chain stores like petco, petsmart and so on.

aggreed on the need for a bigger tank if you want to get another oscar.
And even if you got a bigger tank, you will still have the risk of aggression, when you add onother oscar.
the fin shape theory does not work on oscars and you'd still be guessing if it's a male or female.
Even if you knew the sex for sure, 2 males will probably get territorial with eachother.
A pair or 2 females can live together peacefully, but there's still no guarantee.
i have a very gentle oscar of 2 years old and i found a 7" tiger that i introduced into the 2 years old's territory.
And i was lucky, for they seem to be male and female and get along very well.
mind you, they have enough tankroom to share and i had the possibility to rehome if any aggression issues came up.
