my oscar has 2 big pieces of flesh showing, 1 just behind his eye and the other is in the middle of it's body, part of his top and bottom fins are like rotted away, IS there ANYTHING i can do to help him.

he is about 20cm long, there is no other fish in the tank with him, the ph is 7.3, ammonia is 0, the tank is a 4ft tank

the tank has 2 filters in it some fake plants and a peice of driftwood in there that has a few sorta sharp egdes on it.

i have added multicure to the tank.

Oscars tend to hurt themself even without any other fish in the tank! they can bump into the corner or drift wood and hit rocks!
I have chunks missing on my oscars! there wuz one time that is wuz bad enuff that he thought we were feeding him, and he ran into my girlfriends nails during a water change! a chunk in between his eyes were missing, in less than 3 days u couldn't even find the scar! just do water change and dun worry =) the salt should help with any infection!

Please test for nitrites and nitrates. Do you have pics?

i have tested the nitrites and nitrates
nitrites - 0
nitrates - 10

so if i add salt and does water changes and keep u with multicure
he should be alright.

sorry i can't get any pics at the moment our camera is in the fixing place because my little brother dropped it and yer it didn't after that.

how much salt should i add and what salt should i use

I never really use the measuring! if u got plants in there, dun use too much cuz not all plants are fond of salt!
The measurements if i wuz correct wuz one small teaspoon per 2.5gallon! I rarely do that, i just sprinkle a bit =) do a water change in the morning, sprinkle a bit more.. waterchange.. u should be fine!! Mine have done a million damage to itself!

sound like everyone has given the advice I would have given too.

Let us know how it turns out.

I do not see why each time there is a case for injuries, salt is the first thing to pop up. Doing water changes will pretty much suffice and again, the iodine issue is not an issue at all contrary to popular belief.
