Okay so we went to petsmart tonight and we were trying to decide between an oscar or a convict cichlid, we ended up going home without anything (but a dog rope toy haha) because i didnt feel like spending the money (felt bad because the poor oscars have been in those little tanks forever). So each isn't that big yet, the oscars are probably like 3 inches and the convict is like 1 or 2 inches and right now we have an oscar (small about 2 inches), a jack dempsey and 5 catfish (3 synos, a raphael and a pleco), everything is pretty well under 5 inches and its a 60 gallon grow out- we have a 108 gallon and are building a 8ftx8ft indoor pond in our basement, which should we go with? Is it bad to put 2 oscars together or will we run into problems with aggression with either or?

You shouldn't have any problems with oscars being with convicts at that age. I've had my pair of cons since earlier this year and they can definetly hold their own.

My friend had 2 oscars from them being 2-3" and kept them till they were about 8-10".

i can honestly say that keeping both of these fish at a very young age, they will mature together and grow with each other. Since you have a big tank, just make the aquascaping in a sort of natural way with rocks.driftwood.plants.etc. - So they can have there own space and territories.

- best of luck to ya!

Convicts aren't particularly aggressive unless they're breeding, so you can get both the Oscar and the convict, and since it's just a grow out tank you can always separate a problematic fish if needed. Just make sure none of the Oscars can swallow the convict or you will just be buying em dinner.

I'd get a bigger convict if I were you. I watched a 4" oscar swallow a 1.5" Convict without giving it a second thought.

What would possess the pet store to put them in the same tank is beyond me. Whatever can fit in an Oscars mouth, will.

oh no sorry they aren't in the same tank, we were just trying to decide between either or

but in reality- we'll probably end up with both lol

Definitely get a larger sized convict that wont be oscar food if you end up getting both. 1 of my oscars ate my other oscar 3/4 of its size, still puzzles me how he managed it

ah ya, if we got another oscar they would have to be around the same size and all we've seen around us have been bigger ones then the one we have or ones that are too small, and our oscar hasn't been growing very fast boo. But also with the convict the biggest one we've seen have been pretty small so maybe we'll hold off until we can find one that is a good size compared to the oscar so that they will stay roughly a tad bigger than the oscar

i used to have a couple convicts...then i had a lot! those things breed like rabbits or worse like after every water change whish is every couple weeks lol also there were very aggressive while breeding! if you get more than one of those and you get a mating pair have fun haha
