im thinking about setting up a large aquarium soon and i was wondering if anybody or know anybody that breeds oscars.i realize i can get these fish at any aquarium store and they even sell them at wall mart but i would much rather buy from an actual breeder. im also interested in severums.it would be really cool if i could pick up in person.dayton ohio area.thanxs

They are very hard to sex even at sexual maturity unless vent is displayed, and this only happens typically when they are together. You are best off buying adults that are already sexed or a pair, or buying a group and waiting for a couple to pair off.

i dont plan on breeding oscars im looking to buy smaller fish and watching the oscar grow out so fast is half the fun. i had oscars years ago and they bred more often then i wanted them to and it cause chaos in the tank.i do love watching a pair swim together though.

For what its worth, I went down this same path, and like you, it bore no fruit. Most people seem to prefer the wild oscars, whereas I guess I am one of the folks in the minority who prefer to get tank raised fish if I can, so as to leave the wilds... well... in the wild. that said, I got lucky, and found an incredible oscar at an animal shelter, of all places! LOL... anyway... good luck in your search.

thanks.i guess an oscar is an oscar you just pick out the one you like the most.im not willing to pay that much for an oscar to say its wild.i can buy a common and tell people its wild and my guess is they wouldent know the difference.lol if you catch a gold fish out of the local pond is it a wild? lol. i was just hopeng for a basement breeder.
