I have a young long finned oscar. He was ok for a long time and recently started passing feeder fish undigested. Why would this happen? I cut him off feeder fish and he does ok. When I started giving him feeders again he occasionally passes them undigested. What should I do?

Probably some kind of digestive problem. If the oscar is passing the fish maybe it's telling you that he does not want to eat feeders. Cheaper for you.
Let him eat flakes or pellets whichever you are feeding him and keep him on it.

what has the O been eating and for how long
feeders aren't good choice for Os for a long run unless the feeders have been quarantined for nearly 2 weeks and have been fed with nutritious foods during the Q period

i used to keep o's-and never fed them feeders. if i were you i wouldnt bother with feeders atall-esp. since he cant seem to digest them anyways. best of luck to you and your o!

1) Stop giving your oscar feeders. They have little nutritional value and can contribute to diseases, such as HITH (very common in oscars anyway) and other infections and disorders.

2) Try giving your oscar some freeze dried or even frozen krill. It will help the digestive process.

3) From this point forward, feed your oscar a varied diet of high quality pellets and other suitable freeze dried or frozen prepared foods. Even veggies, like peas, are a good idea.

Thanks for all the input. I feed him cichlid gold often. He also eats tetra min flakes when I feed the others and freeze dried blood worms. I just tried the peas and he had no interest but the plecos love them. I just gave him a bunch of frozen bloodworms and he chowed them quick. I was thinking of switching most of my fish over from cichlid gold to NLS. Is this a good idea? They seem to love the cichlid gold. My long finned oscar with the problem is not very fussy when it comes to food but my Albino Oscar male breeder is very fussy and will only eat cichlid gold once in a while. He prefers minnows, earthworms and large crayfish.
