Noticed my Oscar showing signs of HITH. my water perameters are near perfect, 0 ammo/0 nitrite/ under 15 ppm nitrate. 25-50% WC weekly. I'm on a well and the water is run threw a softening system. PH 7.6ish atm. he gets pellets daily and feeders a few times a week. I feed Hikari Exel, and HIkari Staple to him. frozen bloodworms here and there. I see no typical signs of worms, or holes, so I don't think it's parasite induced. the "skin" ontop of his head seems to be almost pulling back from the flesh in about 3 places. there is no sign of infection. I'm pretty stumped atm. he's a very active and bright eyed and bushy tailed fish otherwise, and the 3 fire eels and needlenose in the tank are all sassy. though one of the eels did stop eating for a few weeks. but is back to eating like a horse. He's almost pure white, can genetics cause this? any imiput would be helpful or suggestions as to what I can try to "cure" this? I'm boggled.. he's also approx 6" and has grown fast. I treated the tank w/ melafix so far to inhibit any potential infection. But I'm not sure where to even start with trying ot fix this issue. I've already poured over the disease section and am stumped.

Salt maybe. That's crazy that your nitrates and etc. aren't out of whack and the Oscar has HITH. Iv'e had one get it, but it was because of water quality.

Can you take a pic?

Does the spot on your Oscar look like the ones in the Pic on the website. I followed this website's plan for stopping HITH and it worked for me. Best website I could ever find on HITH. Hopefully it will help.

by chance what are you feeding your O? I had a fried who thought he'd save money by giving his O pond pellets. instant hith. lol

Thanks packer, the website helped even more and I think I may have figurd it out.. I have a HOB and a canister filter on the tank... and the canister is loaded with carbon... gonna slowly pull that out and replace w/ bio media. and run a micro filter for a few days and see if that helps. and get my water tested again just to make sure it was accurate. the last test was done about 1 1/2 weeks ago but the O has been growing very steadily. so I don't discount it may be wq.. but none of the other fish are showing signs of stress, and my fire eels can be pretty sensetive to that kinda stuff. also going to see about makeing him some more hidey spots for comfort.
