Hello, I am new to the site :headbang2

But I gotta question for anyone who can answer, Ive had my Oscar for 8 months or so now and hes become huge (as expected), so now that he is big he has found a new hobby, ripping up everything in his tank that he can move, so I was wondering if anyone has a set up that their Oscar(s) don't rip up? Or if anybody goes with an unfurnished tank? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Jake

fake plants are the way to go. real plants wont really stand a chance.
i use suction cups and plastic ties to attach plastic plants to the glass.
big rocks and big driftwood perhaps?

Fine sand (pool sand) that they cant move so easily.
or a bare bottom with some larger ornaments.

hope this helps :)

Everything you put in the tank needs to be heavy If you have plants put rocks around them that the fish cant move. You can silicone weights to them if you want.

well i've never owned any oscars but i do have several south american cichlids and they tear up everything, it's almost like they rip up all your hard work to get you back for sticking them in a glass box. you could try siliconing your plants and decor to the bottom of the tank but then it becomes more permenant and more work to move around when you get bored of the set up. good luck with that beast!

What i do with my fish one of the was an Oscar is heavy rocks and drift wood with only live floating plants like hornwort and anacharis. They will destroy every bit of landscaping around said objects but at least the over all look of the tank can stay close to what you want. Its a quick lesson with cichlids they make the gravel and ornaments look how they want not how you want. I just let them do what they want i think it makes it look less artificial.

yeah its gonna be hard work with any kind of plant i have a 9in Oscar that likes to do the same thing. Now i have a large castle and i went out and got some good hand size stones to put in there and make caves. so far he has not been able to move anything. And he still seems happy.

I have a few large stones in his tank now, he can't move them and seems to like them but i want to have some greenery in there ya know? If i can figure out a way to keep those plastic plants down id be very happy too.

will not matter as these guys have the personality of a "puppy". the only way i got them to stop waas to go bigger in a tank and have tank mates. mine always got into stuff when the were bored as it seemed.

Take your plants that you want in the tank and silicone rocks to the bottom of the plants and let it dry for a day or so and then put the plants back in the tank you will be able to rearange you tank this way.Yes Silicone is like a cement and wont hurt your fish.
