hello everyone, I have 2 oscars that I have had for three weeks now they are pretty large, definitely large enough to breed. I was wondering if anyone knew how to tell if they are male or female. I already tried checking their two holes but cannot tell. they often will try locking lips and I noticed that one has a little bigger belly then the other (I try my best to feed them the same amount each) is it possible that the one with the bigger belly could be a female holding eggs?

also the one with the bigger belly is a little smaller in overall size but usually will be the one starting the playful fighting and usually wins because the other will eventually back off

tlindsey tlindsey thanks for the help, bothe my oscars a red oscars and the bottoms of them are a grey color so its hard to see their vents but I will keep trying

They both look male to me. More elongated than oval, dorsal and anal fins greatly overlap the cadual fin. I could be wrong. The best way to know is as you are doing, see how they react to each other. A note, Oscar's can't breed till at least 1.5 years old that is when they hit adulthood.

thanks Jexnell Jexnell they are always next to each other which makes me think they have paired up but maybe they are just good friends.
S Steve_C they are really red because I use color max light and it really brings out the red in them, when I first bought them they were orange under the lfs light
