I have 2 oscars in a 120 gallon tank that I think are starting to mature my guess is that they are about a year and a half old, when I got them they guy at my lfs said they were a little under a year and I have had them for 7 months now. I have tried to tell the sex by venting but havnt been able to tell. I set some slate rock on the bottom with roots that go over it and one of my oscars is very fond of it, my oscar will clean off the slate and push the rocks around that are near it. I was wondering if anyone knew whether if it is more male or female dominate actions my oscar is doing?

Sounds like spawning behavior but they may still be too young.

Ime, both males and females will display the rock cleaning and rearranging. Look for interaction between the fish to confirm if they are pairing up. Like maybe both of them taking turns cleaning the rock or digging.

the one that does the cleaning has also cleared a corner of substrate before I put the slate in also it is the more aggressive of the 2 usually bossing the other around

yup either sex will nest, and females will lay whither other oscar is a male or a female,

I've had my Oscar for over 2yrs and have never seen an egg. Is it safe to assume its a male? Cause I already have been, haha.

I'm not sure about Oscars, but normally there will be some scuffles between the two before spawning, but its different than just fighting. Males usually kinda shake their bodies a bit, both clear off rocks, move gravel, lots of gill flaring and chasing each other.

To some extent they will show typical SA ciclid behavior but nothing like others. male or female will shiver or vibrate, but they will do this any time, seems to be i see you more than anything else .
