Hey guys,
So I’ve been wanting an oscar for my 180 gallon and have been looking for a decent quality one for a while with no luck so i’m going to order online. I can’t decide whether I want an albino or a red. Which have you kept and what are your experiences? I know they are the same just different color but which do you prefer?

I personally like the Red variant or Wild caught Oscar Astronotus Crassipinnis.

What colors are the tank mates? If I'm setting up a tank for visual effect I try to choose fish that look very different from one another. But when it comes to oscars I've found that personality throws my pretty plans out the window lol.

Are you buying a baby or looking for an adult?

The tank mates are bichirs and a black ghost knife. I had also thought about the possibility of a uaru down the road. I would want to get one under the 8” mark since a couple of my senegal bichirs are still only 6”. I’ve been looking like crazy at every store that sells fish around me for a month and the only ones I find are the regular tiger oscars and really really poor quality albinos.

Check craigslist and your local facebook aqarium enthusiasts groups. Its not uncommon to find people trying to unload oscars that size. I have a 10in albino housed with a 12in bichir and a 6in bristle nose. In that tank the oscar is the most regularly visable fish. 20181201_065905.jpg 20190125_062331.jpg

That is awesome! I hope to find one that quality. Do you have pictures of it as a juvenile?

That one was left in an icecream bucket on my porch and he DID NOT look like that when I found him lol. I'm not going to say you can make any rescued fish look great, but you'd be surprised how some of them can shine with clean water and proper nutrition.
