Anyone know of any oscars that have eaten themselves to death in one feeding? I just moved mine to my community tank, and he ate way more than he should have despite my efforts to keep the food away from him. I'm not sure how I will handle this in the future. It will either make feeding time a pain in the butt or he will be a morbidly obese O.

I use a feeding tube to feed my horde of raphael catfish. I also use the tube to push away the Oscar during feeding and he's learned to avoid it. You could try something like this to keep him away from the food.

The problem is that tankmates include SilverDollars which are so skittish that they would stroke if I was waving a feeding tube around.

My oscar is actually a pretty good food disperser for my other fish. He takes in big mouthfuls of food, crushes it and blows it out his gills. All the other fish have figured this out and hover under him and catch the food

haha x2 hell yea. I've seen baby oscars eat so much they get a stomach ache, then they have to lie down on the bottom until they feel better. I tried to limit their bug and shrimp intake after that, but I think they'll get sick and learn their lesson before they explode.

When my fish were small, I fed them some chopped up shrimp for the first time. I put in enough for all the fish, but everyone avoided it since it looked unfamiliar, except for the oscar. He gobbled down all of it until he was so stuffed, it was hanging out of his mouth and he physically could not swallow any more. And still he was mashing his face against the pieces of shrimp sitting on the bottom, looking confused as to why he couldn't keep eating. He lied motionless on the bottom for about 14 hours after that, but he was fine afterwards.
